Key Tool

Bellroy - Key Organiser Multi-Tool

Client

An Australian carry goods company, Bellroy is built on finding better ways to store, protect and carry your items. Based in Bells Beach, Victoria, the Bellroy design team carries an intense focus on user centeredness and sustainable design.

My work here was focused heavily on hard-goods and tech accessories, with an emphasis on the creation and refinement design language in new product areas.

Background

With the upcoming launch of a new key organiser, this was a fast paced project to design a multifuctional tool that would compliment and fit within the Key Case. It was also critical that the piece fit around the complex internal mechanism's of the case while also not placing undue stress on this mechanism when in use.

The initial brief was to create a tool that could be pressed from sheet material, however as the concept evolved, it became clear that die-casting would be necessary to create the desired unique geometry.

Overview

This project was highly iterative, with dozens upon dozens of lasercut prototypes being produced to determine form and functionality.

Though simple in appearance, the design of this piece was a constant battle between maintaining a desirable form and including more functionality. With the added constraint of the internal mechanisms of the Key Case, it was a deceptively complex project.

The final piece was die-cast from 100% hardened stainless-steel.
